Aluminum oxide, with the chemical formula Al2O3, is an inorganic compound known for its high hardness. Its melting point is 2054°C and its boiling point is 2980°C. This ionic crystal can be ionized at high temperatures and is commonly used to produce refractory materials.

Industrial alumina comes from bauxite (Al2O3·3H2O) and hard diaspore. When high purity is needed, chemical methods are used to make Al2O3. Titanium boride-coated carbon blocks are created by mixing titanium boride (TiB2), resin glue, and carbon materials with a solvent and a curing agent. This mixture forms a 5mm~10mm thick coating on standard carbon blocks, which is cured at 150°C~300°C for 40hrs~50hrs and then cooled slowly.

These coated blocks provide good electrical conductivity, improve aluminum's interaction with carbon, and reduce sodium and electrolyte penetration and erosion. Alternatively, a carbon paste with TiB2 can be pressed onto the surface of the block and roasted together.
